Donald J. Trump’s election in November spurred a giant, unanswerable question – what’s going to happen with global trade? In this discussion, supply chain experts favored calm reflection, rather than immediate action, as we really still have no idea what impact Trump’s election will have on supply chains. Discussing this with IndustryWeek Executive Editor Jill Jusko were Jeremy Tancredi, partner in West Monroe’s supply chain practice; Dan Swartz, international tax services principal, Crowe; and Gregory Husisian, partner at Foley & Lardner LLP. Generative AI was the tech story of 2024 with ChatGPT and others showing the mass market what manufacturers have known for decades – machine learning can transform operations. Despite many years of experience with other AI technologies, the growth of generative systems sparked new debate on how the industry would handle the latest systems. Discussing this were Scott Achelpohl, managing editor of IndustryWeek partner publication Smart Industry; Dale Tutt, vice president of Industry Strategy at Siemens; and Aaron Merkin, CTO of Fluke Corp.
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a top oil and gas industry trade group are suing Vermont over its new law requiring that fossil fuel companies pay a share of the damage caused over several decades by climate change. As the queen of the citrus industry, Elle Holbrook plans to advocate for the industry by raising the profile of the products with children at elementary schools and through social media. While the lack of water continues to impact citrus growers, as well as producers of other agricultural products, Murden said the severity of the situation is not being recognized enough. The company, started by her grandfather, Dennis Holbrook, suffered from the winter storm and yielded little to no crop the year after the freeze.
Keynote presentations ranged from 3D printing for the film industry, to additive manufacturing-enabled hydrogen combustion. A talk from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (AFT) discussed 3D printed guns and issues around them. This appearance began a more direct approach to industry engagement on this issue. In California, a larger percentage of the bottom line is spent on labor compared to other states. This doesn’t just mean the dollars for paying staff but includes other costs, such as payroll tax and workers compensation insurance.
Additive manufacturing is set to play a crucial role in this transition. “Additive has really helped us accelerate getting into that hydrogen space because of the challenges that hydrogen brings to the table,” explained Steinberg. He identified how 3D printing can overcome key barriers limiting the adoption of hydrogen energy. For instance, additive manuring has facilitated rapid prototyping, allowing Siemens to quickly iterate and test new designs to meet the unique demands of hydrogen combustion. The rising cost of child care and the lack of flexible options put both parents and businesses under pressure, said the Independent Restaurant Coalition.
Steinberg also emphasized the cost advantages of additive manufacturing. Despite the higher initial costs of 3D printed parts, he pointed to the long-term savings and efficiency gains. A reduced need for oilfiredup.com physical inventories also translates to lower inventory management and taxation costs.
Delilah Snell, who operates Alta Baja Market, a restaurant and market in Santa Ana, said card swipe fees take at least 3% of her bottom line. The fees are particularly a burden on smaller independent restaurants, which already operate on the slimmest of profit margins. Luis Perez, executive chef at Chapter One in Santa Ana, said he’s already paying about $114 for a case of 180 organic eggs. It’s unclear what 2025 has in store for restaurants, but the needs of restaurants and bars are complex and numerous. Here are the top seven challenges restaurants are likely to face in the coming year.
